Not only has this week been a total gaming overload, we also learnt about the next generation of consoles coming from Sony and Microsoft.
Post E3, lets have a look at the Playstation 4.
- Cloud based computing. It looks like developers can make use of cloud computing to handle some tasks remotely, rather than onboard the PS4 itself, something the Xbox One has also been touted as doing.
- User removable HDD. Customers will be able to change and exchange the hard drives on their units, negating the need to get it repaired by approved repairers or Sony themselves.
- Gaikai. Sony purchased Gaikai, and with it Gaikai's cloud gaming technology. Coming to PS4 in 2014, it's still fairly new and Sony are yet to give a total overview of how it works on the Playstation. This is from Gaikai's site:d gaming?
"Cloud gaming" refers to games that are streamed to internet-connected devices. Using the latest streaming and server technology, we enable everything from casual to very high-end games to be played on devices never before possible and eliminate the need to wait hours while games are downloaded.
- PS+. Online play with the PS4 will require a Playstation Plus membership. This really doesn't feel like a big deal if PS+ stays similar to it is now, while hopefully giving us Gaikai and a better online experience.
- £349. The new console will cost £349 at launch, or $399 USD. A huge surprise that shocked a few and undercuts Microsofts Xbox One considerably.
- Region free gaming. The next Playstation will remain region free for games, but still retains its region locking on Blurays and DVDs.
- No console DRM. While the Playstation will have no Digital Rights Management, the developers can still enable DRM policies on games. Recently companies like EA have stated that DRM and the "online pass" policies have been a backward step and have since stopped using them. This comes after Microsoft have said that their console will require online checks for you to play Xbox One titles.
- New UI. The new video here shows us a sneak peak at the user interface and how the OS handles multitasking, streaming and downloading games, sometimes all at the same time.
- Games. Sony have gone on to say that they currently have over 140 titles in the works for the new console. Fancy that.
I'll be adding more info here as I find it. The Playstation 4 looks amazing, and Sony seems to have the upper hand against the other consoles. But this wouldn't be the first time that Sony have looked better on paper though, but time will tell.
